The Category Buyer is a critical individual contributor role in Mercury’s direct material procurement organization.  Reporting to the Category Manager, the Buyer supports Mercury’s global manufacturing operations and product development programs by driving continuous improvements in supplier performance, cost competitiveness, quality, delivery, and innovation.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Execute procurement activities for product development programs as part of cross functional team to:Develop and execute component sourcing and development plans that meet functional, manufacturability, and cost targetsLead the request for quotation/proposal processVisit supplier manufacturing facilities to conduct audits, verify capabilities, and build relationshipsNegotiate best total cost for MercuryIssue component and tooling purchase ordersManage component timelines and budgets to ensure program deliverables are achievedFacilitate cross functional and supplier team meetings, managing action itemsSupport Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP) and Production Part Approval Process (PPAP) actions led by the Mercury Supplier Quality EngineerSupport root cause and corrective action efforts throughout the development cycleLead current production procurement activities for assigned suppliers:Drive continuous improvement in supplier performance for cost, quality, and delivery to ensure Mercury operations are successfully supported and service levels improve year-over-yearNegotiate with current and potential suppliers to achieve lowest total cost solutionsManage production purchase order pricing, including scheduled reviews and updates based on pricing agreements; resolve invoicing/payment issues as needed; monitor critical input costs for assigned categories, such as currency exchange rates and raw materialsProactively identify and execute cost reduction projects; effectively challenge and respond to supplier price increase requestsSupport actions led by the Mercury Supply Chain Analyst or Supplier Quality Engineer to resolve supplier delivery or quality problemsSupport supplier-driven and Mercury-driven change processesContribute and drive continuous improvement activities for Mercury internal processes and systems

Basic Qualifications

BS/BA in Engineering (preferred), Operations Management, Supply Chain or similar field5+ years of experience in sourcing, procurement, or supplier management rolesExcellent negotiating and cost management skills; adept at managing conflict and handling difficult situationsExcellent data analysis abilities and software skills, including Microsoft Excel, Power BI; proficient with Word, PowerPoint, ProjectProficient with engineering prints and specifications, APQP, and PPAP processesExcellent time management and organization skills, able to comfortably manage multiple ongoing projects, prioritize and adapt in response to changing business needsPositive attitude, ethics, and international values to promote a healthy, diverse, high performance cultureOccasional day and/or overnight travel, up to 20%, domestic and international

Preferred Qualifications

Expertise in raw materials, manufacturing processes, and supply base for engine components and/or marine propulsion system componentsExperience in original equipment manufacturer setting with comparable scale and requirements to MercuryC.P.M. and/or CPIM certificationsLean and Six Sigma certification and application experience
